  • Contestants: 600 per Season
  • Top Prize: $500,000
  • Selectivity: 4 Star

American Ninja warrior wrapped up season six in September 2014, and it have produced huge stars like Brian Arnold, Kacy Catanzaro, and Joe Moravsky. The show appears on NBC and is one of the most demanding fitness based shows. Each season begins with 100 people trying to make it through one of five regional courses. The 15 people who complete the all the obstacles the fastest will be invited to the national finals which take place in Las Vegas.

The national finals are called “Mount Midoriyama” and have the top 15 from each region with an additional 15 wildcard contestants who are moved through by the producers. The wildards are usually people who have compelling stories that the audience would be interested in seeing take on the finals. The final obstacle course is divided into four stages which all must be completed in order to win the show and grand prize. The first stage is considerably harder than any of the regional courses and filters out around 75% of the contestants.

The second stage is a beast of an upper body workout as it has many hanging style obstacles back to back without any opportunity for rest. This stage usually whittles the contestants down to five or less. In 2014, only two contestants were able to complete this stage and move on to the third stage. The third stage has never been finished by an individual competitor in America. It has been finished multiple times in the world finals, and these successful runs will help future contestants. The fourth stage is a 77 foot rope climb that.

American Ninja Warrior Casting Tips

When creating a casting video, it’s important to illustrate that you have the physical prowess to tackle the course as well as a personality that can make good television. One of the CastingMaster’s favorite audition submissions was Chris Romrell’s submission below. He was able to demonstrate a lot of personality and make the video funny to watch. Additionally, his montage really removed all doubt in his ability on the course, and best of all he began with a major accomplishment which for him was doing well on a previous season of the show. If you haven’t been on the show before, that’s ok most applicants haven’t, but try to find something that you can use as your “Claim to fame” whether that’s as big as being in the Olympics or as small as being a high school athlete. Our second video is one that spends a lot of time demonstrating a lot of physical ability. We included this one as it has more examples of the types of stunts you want to include in your video.

Applicant Restrictions:

  • Must be 18+ Years Old
  • Must be a US Resident

American Ninja Warrior Preparation Tips

We’ve done a lot of research for some tips to prepare for trying out for the show.  We are by no means experts in this type of exercise.  We simply did research from other sources online and compiled a list here for our readers.  If you are seriously considering applying for the show, I recommend going to a local gym for some practice there and for a list of tips specific to you.  If you are more a casual fan who is looking for a high level idea of how some contestants get in shape, we’ve got the list for that.

Here are some tips that have helped people get in shape for “American Ninja Warrior”:

  • Build a strong upper body: The obstacles on “American Ninja Warrior” require a lot of upper body strength, so focus on exercises that target your arms, shoulders, and chest. Pull-ups, push-ups, and dips are all great exercises to start with.
  • Develop a strong core: Having a strong core is essential for maintaining good form and balance on the obstacles. Try exercises like planks, Russian twists, and leg raises to target your core.
  • Improve your grip strength: Many obstacles require a strong grip, so exercises like deadlifts, farmer’s walks, and gripper exercises can help improve grip strength.
  • Incorporate cardio: Building cardiovascular fitness is important for endurance on the obstacles. Running, cycling, or swimming are all great options.
  • Practice obstacle-specific training: Try to practice on similar obstacles as the ones you’ll see on the show. Many gyms and ninja warrior training facilities have obstacle courses and equipment that will help you prepare.
  • Stay consistent: It’s important to stick to a consistent training schedule in order to see improvements. Even if you can’t make it to the gym, try to incorporate bodyweight exercises into your daily routine.
  • Get enough rest and recovery: Training hard is important, but so is getting enough rest and recovery. Make sure to get enough sleep and allow your body time to recover between workouts.
